Global interest in nutrition labelling has increased significantly, as governments seek effective policy tools to help consumers make informed food choices and encourage healthier diets. Nutrition labelling plays a crucial role in shaping food environments, improving public health, and addressing rising concerns about diet-related diseases. However, as governments introduce labelling regulations, these measures often intersect with international trade rules, leading to discussions and disputes at the World Trade Organization (WTO).This technical note details the methodology used to develop an expanded dataset, outlining the data sources, selection criteria, and analytical framework applied in compiling and updating the information. The 2024 edition of The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets flagship report features the results of the dataset, exploring how trade discussions shape nutrition labelling policies and their broader impact on public health regulation. The report highlights how the dataset’s findings reveal the role of trade concerns in influencing regulations for key products, such as soft drinks and ultra-processed foods, which are crucial in preventing non-communicable diseases within the framework of the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement.
