Reliable land cover information is vital for sustainable resource management, environmental protection, and climate resilience. In Somalia, where natural resources face increasing pressure from climate variability and land degradation, a harmonized classification system is essential for informed planning and decision-making. The Land Cover Reference System (LCRS) for Somalia provides a standardized framework based on the Land Cover Meta Language (LCML). It enhances data consistency, supports land use planning, agricultural development, and food security monitoring, and contributes to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s “four betters” – better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.By improving the accuracy and interoperability of geospatial data, the LCRS strengthens climate resilience, supports early warning systems, and enables integrated resource management. Its development reflects strong collaboration between FAO and the Government of Somalia to ensure reliable, science-based land cover information for national development and sustainable resource governance.
