Contributions from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), individuals in their personal capacity and FAO highlight challenges and opportunities related to some of today’s key emerging issues. The theme of the 2005 edition – “realizing the economic benefits from forests” – recognizes that the economic viability of the forest sec tor is a prerequisite to safeguarding the environmental, social and cultural functions of the resource.
