FAO warns of a renewed risk of upsurge and regional spread of H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in Latin America and the Caribbean. Since late 2025, outbreaks in backyard and commercial poultry and detections in wild birds have been reported in multiple countries, with wild bird migration continuing to drive virus spread and reintroduction risks. FAO calls on Members to strengthen preparedness and prevention, including enhanced biosecurity, risk-based surveillance, early detection, rapid response, and cross-border coordination under a One Health approach, supported by timely virus sequencing and data sharing.
