| dc.description | The Conference on Aquaculture in the Third Millennium (the Bangkok Conference on Aquaculture) was held on 20-25 February 2000 in Bangkok, Thailand, for the purpose of developing a strategy for aquaculture development in the next 20 years. It was a sequel to the Kyoto Conference on Aquaculture, which was organized by FAO in May-June 1976. The Bangkok Conference was attended by 549 participants representing all stakeholder groups in aquaculture. The participants were members of more than 200 organ izations and came from 66 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, the former Soviet Republics, the Near East, North America, and Oceania. The list of participants appears as Annex 3.1. The Bangkok Conference crafted the document Aquaculture Development Beyond 2000: the Bangkok Declaration and Strategy, which has been published separately by NACA/FAO. The Declaration addresses the role of aquaculture in alleviating rural poverty, improving livelihoods and food securi ty, and maintaining the integrity of natural and biological resources and the sustainability of the environment. The Strategy comprises 17 elements that focus on measures that governments, the private sector and other concerned organizations can incorporate into their development programmes for the aquaculture sector. It highlights the need for regional and interregional cooperation to assist in its implementation. This Report of the Bangkok Conference on Aquaculture, the second publication ar ising from the Millennium Conference, includes the detailed recommendations of the fourteen thematic conference sessions. The third publication will be the Technical Proceedings of the Bangkok Conference. The Bangkok Conference was organized by NACA and FAO and hosted by the Government of Thailand. It was held at the Central Plaza Hotel in Bangkok, along with the Aquaculture and Seafood Fair 2000, which was seen by more than 3000 visitors. | |
