Descripción

The Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) initiative provides internationally comparable data on agricultural research systems. The first FAO-led release of the ASTI dataset compiles information on two key indicators: the number of agricultural researchers; and agricultural research and development (R&D) expenditure in government, higher education and private non-profit sectors, collectively referred to here as public agricultural R&D, given their role in generating public goods. This analytical brief presents global, regional and country-level trends in public agricultural R&D from 2004 to 2023. It highlights changes in research capacity and expenditure, as well as persistent disparities in the scale and intensity of investment across national agricultural research systems. In 2023, global public agricultural R&D systems employed 316 000 full-time equivalent researchers; countries spent USD 50.4 billion (in constant 2015 purchasing power parities) on public agricultural research.
