This calendar for 2018 focuses on safety measures to be adopted by local populations before, during or after locust control operations: indeed, although pesticides are applied by well-trained staff, as long chemicals are used, precautions have to be taken to minimize adverse effects on human health and the environment. This calendar therefore provides some practical advices to the benefit of local populations, farmers, shepherds, beekeepers and municipalities living in areas prone to locust infestations in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It will also serve as background documentation, which can be replicated in other languages, for the other Caucasian and Central Asia (CCA) countries participating in the “Programme to improve national and regional locust management in CCA”. Last, the calendar will contribute to increase Programme visibility as a whole towards partners and stakeholders and promote monitoring and mitigation of impact of locust control operations on human health and the environment.
