The 2030 Agenda includes water security for all, particularly through the achievement of SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation) and its related targets. The achievement of this goal is especially difficult in the Near East and North Africa (NENA), where water has always been scarce and in short supply. In recent years, the issue has been compounded by an increasing population and the effects of climate change. The Water Efficiency, Productivity and Water Sustainability (WEPS-NENA) project was designed to facilitate sustainable growth in the NENA region through safe water use. This was to be done with the provision of an adaptive framework for: (i) water resource management and allocation; (ii) reviewing water, food security and energy policies and their nexus; (iii) formulating strategies and investment plans; (iv) modernizing governance and institutions; (v) accounting and tracking flows of surface and groundwater; and (vi) adopting good agricultural practices (GAP).
