Since its first publication in 1982, this document has been extensively used by field workers, including the author Dr Robert C. Zimmermann himself. This has resulted in some useful feedback on the application of the guidelines which is summarized below for users. In practice, it has been found that the guidelines are useful in clarifying assessment procedure. Figure 1 outlines this and serves to identify the particular steps to be undertaken in any given situation. The guidelines are also useful in helping to organize one's thoughts and the collection of data. The steps listed on pages 9-10 are especially applicable in this connection.
