The growth of normal and dwarf mutant bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var Mexico 80-R) is compared as part of a preliminary study to investigate the content of gibberellin-like substances in these plants. To determine the difference in the growth between the normal and dwarf mutant bean plants, seedlings were grown in Hoagland´s solution No 2 in glass flasks and then measured. The greatest growth difference was found in the second internode length. The dwarf mutant´s growth is inhibited after the formation of the second internode, apparently due to the lack of the gibberellin-like substance necessary for normal growth. It was found that both the dwarf mutant and the normal plants, on oven-drying, last an equal amount of water in relation to the total plant, however the normal plant lost a greater percentage of moisture as compared to the dwarf, when equal samples were weighed
