The module outlines the role of the food inspector as extending beyond mere verification of compliance to that of a guardian of public health. It emphasizes the inspector’s responsibility for ensuring food safety and managing risks throughout the entire food supply chain. The module describes the knowledge inspectors should possess in legal and regulatory frameworks, food science, and food safety management systems, as well as the inspection skills and professional conduct required for the role. Inspectors are expected to implement quality management through comprehensive document reviews and on-site inspections. The module also identifies the areas to be assessed during inspections, providing examples of rating scales and scoring methods, and explains how to identify and address systemic issues that may arise.
