Thanks to the Government of Kuwait, FAO is revitalizing local food production in Yemen by repairing and rehabilitating critical agricultural infrastructure. Water and irrigation networks, which have been damaged or destroyed due to conflict and no longer functional, are a critical priority. Damaged infrastructure has resulted in less food, income deterioration, increased prices and reduced employment opportunities. The scarcity of water resources due to conflict and multiple shocks led to 70 percent of farmers’ tenants losing their income opportunities. Strengthening irrigation through employment allows the poorest and most vulnerable people to access nutritious food and be better equipped to cope with future shocks.
In support of FAO’s Emergency Livelihoods Response Plan for Yemen, Kuwait’s generous contribution will help more than 78 000 people, including host community members, internally displaced people and returnees. Cash‑for‑work activities, such as rehabilitating irrigation canals and promoting traditional water harvesting techniques, will improve and diversify vulnerable people’s income and agricultural livelihoods. This work engages women and youth in water management to mitigate flood risks and support farming activities. Cash transfers enhance community productivity and cohesion by increasing access to common agricultural assets and infrastructure. In addition, communities will benefit from training aimed to strengthen institutional capacity.
