This legal study explores the transformative potential of innovative and evidence-based legal frameworks to advance climate-smart agriculture within West Africa's forestry and natural resource sectors. Drawing from extensive research and seven FAO initiatives, it identifies key elements of effective legal interventions, including multistakeholder engagement, cross-sectoral coordination, and participatory approaches. The study underscores the role of evidence and innovation in driving impactful reforms that support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and FAO Programme Priority Areas. Recommendations emphasize bridging research and law-making, integrating customary laws, leveraging behavioral science, and enhancing compliance mechanisms to address global challenges like deforestation, climate change, and food insecurity. It concludes that while progress has been made, continued legal innovation is essential to reverse forest decline and achieve sustainable agrifood systems.
