Association of Family Forest Owners, Nepal (AFFON) is an umbrella organization, established in 2015 with the objective of ensuring rights of the family forest owners and advocacy for family forest owners. There are 10,000 members associated with AFFON over the country. It conducts plantation campaign for growing more trees. It has policy documents ensuring the inclusive provisions and the forum is helpful for leadership development from grass root level family forest farmers to policy level leaders. More than 50 million trees have been growing in family forests in Nepal. Although, family forest of Nepal contributes 60% timber supply in market, it has no estimation of carbon sequestration. The trees growing in family forest plays the crucial role in both adaptation and mitigation. Despite the numerous scope of family forest Government of Nepal, policy makers and stakeholders and international donors are not much focused on issues of family forestry in Nepal. Family forest has wider scope to organize farmers to explore opportunities for plantation, family forest management, green enterprise development, and Eco-tourism development, employment generation through green job promotion, networking and knowledge sharing, contribution in reduction of timber import, promotion of agroforestry. It can contribute to reduce the pressure in national forest. People are being self-sustain in forest products from their own farm land. Despite so many opportunities, family forest has so many challenges; policy gaps for promotion and marketing of forest products (Timber, NTFPs) from family forests. Though the families have land tenure, tree tenure is still lacking. There is no provision to get loan taking family forest as a collateral, insurance, grants and subsidies, inadequate technical knowledge of forest owners on forest management. The future focus of AFFON to amplify the opportunities and reduced the challenges; scaling of the tree plantation to increase carbon sequestration, research and extension, strengthening networking, skill development, entrepreneurship development and integrate the program with climate change adaptation and mitigation, policy advocacy for securing the right of family forest owners. It conducts campaign for management of family forests as well as establishment of rights of family relying on family forest for their livelihood.
