Forest degradation, together with resulting habitat loss and fragmentation, is one of the key environmental problems currently faced by Serbia. On a large scale it has resulted in loss of forest carbon, biodiversity and other important ecosystem goods and services, and has substantially reduced the potential of Serbian forests to act as carbon sinks. In this context, the Forestry Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia (adopted in 2006) defines the conservation and improvement of biodiversity in forest areas as part of the concept of sustainable forest management (SFM). The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management (MAFW) implements forest management and protection-related activities through a Forest Fund, providing services and supporting the implementation of SFM in public and private forests. However, key barriers remain for the mainstreaming of SFM in Serbia, such as an inadequate policy and strategic framework, and sectoral coordination to define and systematically implement specific pathways for SFM that incorporate climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation objectives, among others. Against this background, the project aimed to promote multifunctional SFM to conserve biodiversity, enhance and conserve carbon stocks, and secure forest ecosystem services in productive forest landscapes.
