The inappropriate use of pesticides in low- and middle-income countries continues to pose significant risks to farmers, workers, consumers, and the environment. While many developed countries have phased out highly hazardous pesticides, these chemicals are still in use in developing countries, leading to contaminated water sources, degraded soil, biodiversity loss, and serious human health issues. To address these challenges, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), supported by the Swedish Chemicals Agency (KemI), implemented this project to strengthen pesticide management by encouraging uptake of the International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management (hereinafter, the Code).The project focused on building national and regional capacity, developing and updating key guidance documents in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), and providing training on the FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit (PRT). The project also promoted regional cooperation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and East African Community (EAC), supporting a range of national risk assessments. By enhancing regulatory frameworks and fostering collaboration, FAO’s efforts contributed to better pesticide management, reducing reliance on highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs), and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.
