As populations increase in Atoll PICs, demand for fish is expected to exceed the ability of coastal fisheries to supply the quantity needed to support local communities and their livelihood options.The Cook Islands, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu were among the Atoll PICs to officially request FAO technical assistance in the areas of aquaculture development and alternative income-generating activities to capture fisheries. The four countries had previous mariculture experiences with limited success, mostly as a result of poor business planning and focalization on export-oriented commodities. There was room for expansion of the mariculture sector by farming local aquatic species and targeting domestic consumption.The project aimed to assess previous mariculture activities in Atoll PICs, and to promote and develop sustainable mariculture with a focus on production for domestic purposes. It would do this by developing specific assessments for each country, culminating in “Guidelines for Sustainable Mariculture Development in Atoll PICs”. Some initial recommendations contained in the Guidelines were tested at field level in targeted countries, with the (re)establishment or development of specific mariculture activities.
