dc.descriptionLivestock exports contribute approximately 40% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 80% of foreign currency earnings. A major impediment to livestock trade is the occurrence of livestock diseases. In the absence of a reliable Animal Health Information System, Puntland state of Somalia has been unable to fully exploit global livestock markets due to its inability to control outbreaks of animal diseases. This has led to high rates of livestock rejections at the export port and increased risk of dis ease spread to importing countries which has in the past led to import bans. Puntland, therefore, requires an effective system for gathering animal health data from the field, processing it in ways that provide maximum value, and presenting it in a form which is easy for national policy-makers for effective disease prevention and control.
