| dc.description | The document aims to provide guidance for the design of insurance policies and programmes for the fisheries sector based on a review of experiences with fisheries insurance programmes in Asia. These experiences were discussed at a Regional Conference on Insurance and Credit for Sustainable Fisheries Development in Asia, held in Tokyo, Nihon University, 11-15 November 1996, which was jointly organized by the National Federation of Fishery Co-operative Associations of Japan (Zengyoren), th e Asia Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA) and the Fisheries Department of FAO and attended by participants from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Micronesia, Nepal, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and Norway as well as by observers from Bolivia, Brazil, Senegal and Tunisia The document commences with an overview of fisheries insurance programmes in Asia. It then highlights the need for fisheries and aquaculture ins urance and elaborates on planning and practices and on the design of fisheries and aquaculture insurance schemes. It concludes by proposing basic principles and concepts for the development of fisheries insurance policies and programmes. The Annexes to the document include information on fisheries and aquaculture mutual insurance programmes in Japan, on fishing vessel insurance schemes in Japan, on fishery credit and insurance guarantee systems in Japan as well as the list of participa nts and the programme of the Regional Conference on Insurance and Credit for Sustainable Fisheries Development in Asia, Tokyo, Nihon University, 11-15 November 1996. | |
