The agricultural sector in Saint Lucia has undergone significant change in recent decades. The decline of traditional export crops such as sugar and bananas, combined with the recent disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to national food supply chains, has exposed vulnerabilities in food security and highlighted the urgent need to diversify and modernize the sector. In response, there has been renewed focus on strengthening agricultural production to generate inclusive economic growth, safeguard livelihoods and enhance resilience. The project contributed to the overarching goals of decreasing rural poverty in farming communities and increasing food security and independence in Saint Lucia. Through targeted interventions in the ginger and pork value chains, alongside institutional strengthening for land bank management, the project helped to build resilient systems that link farmers to markets, attract investment and promote the adoption of sustainable and climate-smart practices.
