The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands (MILLs), implemented the TCP/ETH/3901 project titled “Support for Developing Irrigation Standards and Regulations for Ethiopia” from January 2023 to June 2025. The initiative aimed to establish comprehensive national irrigation standards and regulations, and these frameworks were designed to promote the development of high-quality, cost-effective irrigation systems ultimately increasing irrigated agriculture productivity, enhancing overall production, and ensuring sustainability.Ethiopia has made irrigated agriculture a top priority to expand cultivated areas, with goals of increasing agricultural production, improving water efficiency, and driving sustainable economic development. Irrigation plays a vital role in boosting food production, rural household earnings, and employment opportunities. Despite ongoing efforts, numerous irrigation projects in Ethiopia fail to meet economic and environmental targets due to inadequate studies, deficient design work, poor construction quality, and ineffective management. These shortcomings threaten long-term sustainability. A key reason for this suboptimal performance is the lack of standardized national irrigation standards for comparing design criteria and related regulations.
