This briefing note gives an overview of a new initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), funded by the Government of the Netherlands, to boost resilience and food security in Somalia, South Sudan and the Sudan, all of which are faced with severe hunger and protracted crises.
The Food and Nutrition Security Resilience Programme (FNS-REPRO) aims to show that development interventions centred on strengthening livelihoods over the longer term can take place at a large scale, even in unstable operational theatres. FNS-REPRO's work is committed to improving rural communities' access to and management of natural resources, generating enhanced and new livelihood opportunities along agricultural value chains, and enhancing people's capacity to explore and take advantage of those new opportunities.
By helping communities identify and mitigate risks, the project intends not only to improve food and nutrition security but also to contribute to the Global Network Against Food Crises by addressing the root causes of hunger, meeting humanitarian needs, promoting sustainable development and sustaining peace.
