Animal genetic resources AnGR are the primary biological capital for livestock development, food security and sustainable rural development Despite their importance, however, the values of livestock biodiversity and domestic breeds are yet not fully understood and this has led to a substantial erosion of genetic diversity Livestock production is an important economic sector in the Mongolian economy Agriculture contributes around ten percent of total gross domestic product ( and the livestock sector produces more than 80 percent of gross agricultural product According to national statistics in 2018 230 800 households owned livestock of these, 160 700 were classified as herders In terms of livestock population, 66 4 million livestock were counted, the largest livestock population in history Although livestock censuses have been conducted annually since 1960 the last qualified census at breed level was carried out in 1989 Very limited information on breeds is available in the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD IS www fao org/dad is/en and most of this is outdated In addition, the importation in recent years of various species and breeds has created the risk of erosion of the gene pool of native breeds of livestock There is thus a need for a national breed wise census and assessment of the status of animal genetic resources of Mongolia to determine current conditions and suggest feasible development strategies.
