Soil is the basis of our nation’s agroecosystems which provide us with feed, fiber, food and fuel. One of the basic prerequisites for sustainable soil management is systematic soil data collection through field surveys and continuous monitoring. Data on soil properties must then be organised into an easy-to-use data base that is accessible to all of the scientists and decision-makers who might need it. Such data must be collected broadly and contain information on land cover, type of soil, soil structure, drainage patterns, and much more.
Having such granular soil data allows better planning to support crop planting patterns, better irrigation planning, climate change mitigation and adaptation, ecosystem service provision, land rehabilitation planning, and so much more.
