dc.descriptionThe bioeconomy is defined as the production, utilization, and conservation of biological resources, including related knowledge, science, technology, and innovation, to provide information, products, processes and services across all economic sectors aiming toward a sustainable economy. It is seen as a key engine for food security, socio-economic reactivation, and the fight against climate change. This approach is driven by advances in science and technology (S&T), such as biological sciences, artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, digitalization, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The bioeconomy makes significant contributions to transforming food systems by aligning with the five Action Tracks of the UN Food Systems Summit. It enhances food security through sustainable intensification and the use of technology to increase crop and livestock yields. It improves environmental sustainability and climate action by promoting the replacement of fossil fuels, reducing waste and residues, and encouraging eco-intensive practices. Furthermore, it helps create new rural jobs and diversifies income sources through the development of decentralized, bio-based value chains and industries. The use of biofortified genetically modified (GM) crops also contributes to improved nutrition and health by increasing the content of proteins, vitamins, and minerals in foods. To fully realize the bioeconomy's potential, several steps are necessary. This includes significant public and private investment in basic and applied research and the training of highly-skilled professionals. The "educational industrial complex"—where publicly supported research leads to private sector expansion—is essential for establishing new technology sectors. Success also requires a science-based regulatory environment that reduces burdens and accelerates the development and application of new, safe technologies, while overcoming institutional barriers like differing regulations across countries.
