| dc.description | The northwest of Iran hosts unique indigenous livestock breeds such as Bactrian camels, Sarabi cattle, Mahabadi goats, and Markhoz goats that face severe threats from water scarcity, climate change, and socio-economic pressures. These breeds are vital for biodiversity, food security, and cultural heritage, yet their populations are declining due to limited technical capacity, lack of structured breeding programs, and insufficient market integration. FAO project aims to empower local communities and strengthen institutional frameworks to conserve and develop these genetic resources. It will address challenges through community-based breeding programs, cryopreservation of genetic material, and advanced reproductive technologies to boost population resilience; capacity building workshops and study tours to enhance technical knowledge; and the establishment of milk and mohair processing centers to improve livelihoods and create value-added products. | |
