There are over 4500 fruit fly species in the world and more than 50 of them are classified as major pests. There have been cases of succesful eradication of fruit flies in the Pacific, such as, in Nauru (Mango fruit fly, Breadfruit fruit fly, Oriental fruit fly) from 1998 - 2000 and the Oriental fruit fly in the 1960s. The fruit fly management fact sheet outlines the impacts of three species of fruit flies (Mango fruit fly, Breadfruit fruit fly, Oriental fruit fly) in Palau. The fact sheet describes the biology, distribution, hosts and method of control of the fruit flies.
