Agriculture is an important sector for the economy and labour force in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition to water scarcity and poor soil areas, the farming system is based on smallholders who use their own saved seed and farming techniques for production, which is contributing to inefficient agricultural systems and wide-scale migration to cities. Although around 30 percent of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s total surface is suited for agricultural activities, only 12 percent of the land is cultivated due to the lack of adequate water distribution, which leaves most farms to implement dryland systems. Furthermore, water security has become a central challenge for development in a context of exacerbated difficulties to access food and land resources, due to climate change. Since smallholder producers face low production and low-income challenges, this project aimed to unlock the full potential of rainfed agriculture to enhance productivity and income. The project also sought to fill the gaps related to new technologies and partnerships for sustainable management of crops, livestock, soil and water resources and to build resilience against the effects of climate change to create sustainable farming systems.
