The UNJP/ZIM/033/EC project (ERVHIZ), funded by the European Union and jointly implemented by FAO and UNICEF in collaboration with the Government of Zimbabwe from January 2021 to February 2025, aimed to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable households in Matabeleland South Province. The evaluation confirmed the project's high relevance and its alignment with national priorities and partner strategies. It also noted significant progress in food security, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and climate resilience. This progress resulted in strengthened individual and institutional capacities, positive behavioural changes in hygiene and nutrition practices, and the interest shown by beneficiaries in climate change-resilient technologies and systems that have been tested and proven. However, in the agricultural component, although several other planned activities were successfully completed, the planned agropastoral infrastructure could not be installed within the allotted timeframe, thus missing the opportunity to harness its transformative potential and generate the expected benefits. Apart from the positive results already mentioned, the project's effectiveness and efficiency were clearly limited by delays in procurement procedures, unsynchronized implementation of components, and insufficient integration between sectors, particularly in monitoring and evaluation. These factors reduced opportunities for synergy and the potential impact, especially in the agricultural sector. It is recommended to strengthen participatory planning and adapt design elements to realistic implementation contexts. Future interventions should improve procurement arrangements, harmonize the deployment of activities, and strengthen coordination as well as monitoring and evaluation framework between the national and local levels. Emphasis is also placed on promoting sustainable trade linkages, expanding gender-sensitive programmes, and integrating social inclusion strategies from the outset to build more resilient, equitable, and community-managed outcomes.
