El objetivo de este documento fue presentar los efectos de huracanes sobre bosques tropicales del Caribe y plantear interrogantes y sugerencias sobre su manejo. Para este estudio se tomaron datos en la costa norte de Honduras en áreas afectadas por el huracán Fifí en 1974. Los bosques estudiados mostraron diferencias en estructura entre rodales disturbados por huracán y los no disturbados, pero no en la composición de especies. Los rodales disturbados por huracán difieren en composición y estructura de los perturbados por agricultura que luego son abandonados. Existen desigualdades en la respuesta de las especies ante el disturbio
This document aims at presenting the effects of hurricanes on the Caribbean tropical forests and outline questions and suggestions for management of these forests. The work is based on fieldwork in sites affected by Hurricane Fifí along the north coast of Honduras in 1974. The forests studied show differences in structure between disturbed and not disturbed stands, but not so in species composition. The stands disturbed by the hurricane do, however, differ in both species composition and structure from stands cleared for agriculture and later abandoned. Differences exist in species response to disturbances, some responding with abundant recruitment, others only regenerating in heavily disturbed sites.
