Resumen
Descripción
The agricultural sector in Lebanon plays an important role in securing self-sufficiency in a number of food commodities, and is considered a major cornerstone in the rural economy. In rural areas, agriculture-related activities account for up to 80 percent of the local GDP and employs about 9 percent of women-headed agricultural holdings.
Lebanese agriculture relies, mostly, on crops, such as fruit trees, cereals and tobacco, in addition to livestock, such as dairy cattle, sheep, goats and poultry. Unofficial estimates point to a reduction of up to 26 percent in agricultural production between 2019 and 2020,2 mostly related to the shift of the agriculture and agri-food sectors to a low input system.
Prior to the financial and economic crisis that started in October 2019, Lebanon’s agricultural sector was beset by several productivity constraints. The ongoing crises have amplified its existing problems, thus, supporting the sector’s resilience is vital for food security and for alleviating poverty in rural areas.
