| dc.description | In 1995/96, Sri Lanka experienced a serious drought which significantly reduced production of both the main Maha and secondary Yala rice crops. The population in the north were particularly affected by the drought and by continued civil strife, which accentuated food supply difficulties. In view of these events, and at the request of the Government a joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission was recently fielded to review 1996/97 rice production and the overall food supply situation. In addition to discussions with Government, UN agencies and NGOs, at central and district level, field visits were made to the main rice producing areas of Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Moneragala, Hambantota and Ratnapura. Although the mission visited Vavuniya, which acts as a co-ordinating office for the uncleared districts of Vavuniya (North), Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu, the northern part of the country was not visited due to the prevailing security situation. | |
