| dc.description | While the Eastern Mediterranean is home to active fisheries that provide important sources of food and employment, overfishing and environmental degradation pose a threat to their sustainability. In addition, scarce fisheries data and weak fisheries management in some parts of the region hinder the transition towards sustainable fisheries production systems in the subregion. The objective of the EastMed programme was to support the sustainability of marine fisheries in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and its ecosystem, taking into consideration environmental, biological, economic, social and institutional issues in countries in this area. The activities carried out during the eighth year of the EastMed programme, which are the focus of this project, were designed to help consolidate the achievements to date, enhancing national capacities for fisheries management and strengthening subregional cooperation for the management of shared resources in the Eastern Mediterranean. | |
