Mozambique's southern region, particularly Gaza Province, frequently experiences drought conditions that significantly affect agricultural production, rural livelihoods and food security. Early warning systems forecast moderate to severe drought conditions for the 2025/26 season, risking further deterioration of food security without timely action. Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Resilience Activities (SFERA), the Government of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to mitigate the impacts of the drought on over 4 100 vulnerable farming households. The project provided families with training, e-vouchers to access tools and seeds, and support for the construction of rainwater harvesting systems to improve access to water.
