Anhui Province is one of the major-grain producing areas of China and exports five million tonnes of grain every year. The shortage of rural labour in China and the recent change in farming lifestyles mean that rural populations now use gas rather than crop residue as fuel, while intensive livestock production, which requires more concentrated animal feeds, has replaced free grazing of crop residues. More mechanical harvesting has also caused crop residues to be left in the fields. Farmers are now becoming reluctant to collect crop residue and re-use it, with the utilisation significantly reduced as a result. The huge quantity of crop residue being burned in fields results in serious environmental pollution, disturbs the soil constitution and fertility for sustainable local agriculture production and food security. In this context, the project aimed to return crop residue into farmers’ fields, improving soil fertility, increasing grain yields and reducing land degradation effectively.
