The results are presented of the 1989 fishery census carried out in Zanzibar with the following objectives: 1) to confirm the number and location of all landing sites; 2) to identify all principal artisanal fishery types; 3) to determine the number of fishing units by fishery type and administrative region; 4) to determine the number, distribution, characteristics and mode of ownership of boats, engines and gears by fishery type and region; and 5) to investigate the seasonality of use of fish la nding sites by fishery type and region.
