Nauru imports over 90 percent of its food and the cost of food on the domestic market is relatively high. Cheap and highly processed food products constitute the local diet and this has contributed to the rise of non-communicable diseases as a result of poor nutrition. The Government has thus prioritized agriculture and the need to improve local food production as a pathway to improving health, food and nutrition security and sustainable livelihoods. The project aimed to address issues related to food and nutrition security and sustainable livelihoods by introducing appropriate technology on integrated agroforestry production and crop utilization to 150 vulnerable households. The specific objective was to improve nutrition and livelihoods in households through the local production of fruits and food crops for consumption and profit. The project also expected to diversify dietary intake at family level through improved knowledge of the nutritive value of crops grown and of food-related practices.
