Mali’s volatile humanitarian situation has further deteriorated in 2019 and particularly during the last two months due to increased attacks by armed
groups and recurrent inter-community conflict. In addition to structural weaknesses and chronic poverty, conflict and natural disasters affecting the country have caused the destruction of infrastructure, the disruption of livelihoods and forced displacement, particularly in the Liptako Gourma area, resulting in limited access to basic social services and putting additional pressure on already limited resources.
Given the deteriorating livelihoods and food security situation, FAO has activated a corporate scale‑up to enhance emergency response. Together with other agencies, such as the World Food Programme, FAO is supporting the Government’s response to the crisis by strengthening the resilience of vulnerable people to shocks in the medium to long term, while also providing immediate assistance. Joint actions benefiting the most vulnerable communities through context-specific assistance and integrated approaches (gender- and nutrition-sensitive) will help to address the root causes of food insecurity and vulnerability, and prevent dependency on humanitarian aid. Without additional funding in the coming months, vulnerable populations will face serious challenges to meeting their food and livelihood requirements.
