Descripción
The tea sector faces numerous challenges including low productivity, aging tea bushes, high production costs, aging growers, labour shortages, and low-quality tea. Since the mid-1990s, declining global tea prices and rising production costs, particularly for labour and energy, have led to the abandonment of about 86 percent of tea gardens. The Government of Mauritius aims to revive the sector by leveraging its unique island characteristics and increasing local and global demand for Mauritian tea. The project will leverage existing networks, government plans, and investments to ensure the sustainable development of the tea sector. It will improve partnerships, maximize technical resources, and leverage financial resources for sustainability, contributing directly to national development efforts through technology and information system implementation. The project seeks to revive the Mauritius tea sector through a comprehensive strategy addressing institutional, agronomic, technological, and branding challenges. It involves a collaborative effort between the Government of Mauritius, FAO, and various stakeholders, emphasizing capacity development, gender sensitivity, and youth involvement to ensure long-term sustainability and growth of the tea industry.
