Descripción
The vast majority of farmers in Eritrea are subsistence growers, producing mainly for domestic consumption with little surplus for the market. The production of date palm offered an opportunity to improve farmers’ incomes and food security; however, the quality of high yielding varieties in the country was inadequate. The Government sought to assist farmers to access adequate quantities of high-quality, improved varieties of date palm, but progress was slow because of insufficient technical capacity. The project aimed to strengthen capacity to produce high-quality, improved and disease-free tissue-cultured planting materials of date palm and other crops for farming communities in the country.
