El objetivo del estudio fue de conocer el rol de los sistemas agroforestales (SAF) cacaoteros y bananeros en la conservación de la biodiversidad en la zona indígena de Talamanca, Costa Rica. Se caracterizó la diversidad y densidad de árboles de sombra presentes en bosques, cacaotales y bananales, a través de parcelas temporales (20 X 50 m). Se comparó la diversidad y abundancia relativa de mamíferos terrestres en los tres hábitats a través del registro de sus huellas en transectos. Adicionalmente se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a 20 productores cacaoteros y 20 bananeros para determinar los beneficios y problemas que la biodiversidad representa para los productores.
The objective of the study was to determine the role of cacao and banana agroforestry systeMON in the conservation of biodiversity in the indigenous region of Talamanca, Costa Rica. The diversity and density of trees in forests, cacao plantations and banana plantations was characterized using temporary plots (20 X 50 m). The diversity and relative abundance of terrestrial mammals in the three habitats was compared by registering mammal footprints in established transects. In addition, interviews were conducted with 20 cacao farmers and 20 banana farmers to determine both the benefits and probleMON of the biodiversity present in their agroforestry systeMON.
