Building on its vast experience and expertise in developing food systems globally, FAO aims to promote structural transformation by reducing barriers to trade, improving linkages between domestic, regional and international food chains and increasing private-sector engagement in the design of related policies. Greater market concentration and the need to produce for a more integrated global market have raised new barriers to entry for small family farmers and food enterprises. With the ultimate goal of increasing intra-continental trade and bringing efficiencies to value chains, FAO and its partners will draw on the potential of these value chains to increase regional trade, improve food security and nutrition and create employment opportunities.
