This paper highlights the concern about reduction in genetic diversity which has been expressed primarily in terms of loss of breeds and strains. Examines molecular genetic techniques and the measurement of genetic diversity within species. Current needs to estimate genetic relationships among strains/breeds of different bovine and their relationships with their wild relatives is also mentioned.
