The good, the bad and the ugly: income determinants and a typology of commercial agarwood harvesters in Lao PDR

Based on interviews with 103 leaders of groups harvesting agarwood in various parts of Lao
PDR we identify income determinants and prepare a typology of harvesters. There are three
main groups of harvesters: [a] highly professional, migrant harvesters from Vietnam; [b] nonlocal,
professional harvesters and [c] local harvesters. From interpretation of auxiliary
information it emerges that groups [b] and [c] can be further subdivided based on experience
and harvesting strategy and in the final typology we therefore distinguish five categories of
harvesters. Income determinants are mainly related to product and market variables,
structural characteristics of harvesting groups, opportunistic harvesting and knowledge and
experience.
