Mountain areas in developing countries are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as increases in the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events and natural hazards. In this context, forests and other mountain ecosystems play a crucial role in reducing negative impacts for both upstream and downstream communities. Mountain ecosystems, which mainly consist of forestland and agricultural land, demonstrate multiple functions such as biodiversity conservation, conservation of the global environment, prevention of natural disasters, land conservation, among others. Given that forestry and agriculture are often the backbone of mountain economies, sustainable agricultural practices can effectively serve as a tool for land conservation and thereby ensure sustainable livelihoods while improving the resilience of farmer communities. However, due to increased exposure to pressures of land use change, climate change, exploitation, and so on, forests and agricultural land are being degraded. In response to these issues, the project focused on strengthening the capacities of institutions and communities on the risk-based watershed management approach for forest and land use management.
