It is estimated that over 2.4 billion people worldwide depend on forest goods and services for the direct provision of food, wood fuel, building materials, medicines, employment and cash income. Forests contribute to the four dimensions of food security and nutrition (FSN) in multiple ways. The most commonly known way in which forests contribute to one’s improved FSN status is through the provision of edible Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFPs) which contain a high nutrition value in terms of micron utrients and provide medicinal resources for a wide array of ailments. However and in addition to the direct provision of food, one of the most important contribution of forests to FSN is the use of woodfuel for improved food utilization and nutrition. Over half of all wood produced in the world is used for energy, affecting the nutritional status of about 2.4 billion people, who rely on woodfuel for cooking and water sterilization. Therefore, the proposed Information Brochure and the Fact Sheet will be developed: 1) to raise awareness on the linkages between wood energy and food security and nutrition and 2) to support cross-sectoral approach in developing forestry and food security policies, programmes and projects.
