Resumen

Descripción

The preservation of guadua (Guadua angustifolia)culms is an important process which affects theirquality after harvesting and their subsequent utilizationas a raw material in handicraft, furniture andconstruction. Boron and boric acid are frequentlyused in the preserving solution (PS). To ease theadsorption the culm diaphragm is usually drilledbefore immersion in the PS. We performed a factorialexperiment to determine the possible effectsof drilling the culm diaphragm on compressionand shear strength. Two measures of culm maturitywere considered. The traditional measure is definedby the external features of the culms and another isbased on the time since culm emergence. Varianceanalyses did not show any significant (p > 0.05)difference in mechanical properties when the diaphragmwas drilled. Nevertheless, those culms withmaturity defined using the traditional approach hadsignificantly lower values of compression and shearstrength. In addition, culms with higher moisturecontent were significantly stronger.
