Eritrea has an estimated livestock population of two million cattle, four million small ruminants and about 400 000 camels. Despite their vital role, the contribution of camels to the national and household economy has often been overlooked, with limited investment in research and development. In recent years, an emerging camel disease has caused high morbidity and mortality, particularly in the Northern Red Sea, Southern Red Sea and Gash Barka regions. Between September and November 2022, numerous camel deaths were reported and laboratory results confirmed anthrax in some samples. Although antibiotic treatment reduced mortality, mass vaccination was urgently required to prevent further losses threatening food security and livelihoods. FAO assistance was requested in this regard.
