Indonesia has made ambitious commitments to global climate action through its nationally determined contributions (NDC), pledging to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions unconditionally by 31.89 percent by 2030 and up to 42.3 percent with international support. With the forestry and other land use (FOLU) sector expected to contribute approximately 58 percent of reductions, reliable forest monitoring data is crucial for measuring and reporting progress. While Indonesia has improved its satellite-based land monitoring systems in recent years, its National Forest Inventory (NFI) remained largely unchanged since the late 1980s and no longer met monitoring requirements for climate change reporting under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In response, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) collaborated with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) to modernize the NFI component of Indonesia’s National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) to better support climate change commitments and improve forest resource management.
