Many people in the Tokelau atolls are involved in fishing activities, which play a key role in food security and in the resilience strategy of the territory Despite its importance, the sector is plagued with issues that put the lives of fishers at risk Many factors contribute to this problem, including a weak sea safety regime, extreme weather events and the small and simple vessels that fishers use In addition, overfishing and improper waste disposal drive fishers further from the shore This, combined with a lack of proper safety equipment and training, puts their lives in grave danger This project sought to improve safety at sea practices and protocols among fishing communities in Tokelau by i providing them with safety equipment ;;( deciding on the roles and responsibilities of village councils and fishers in the management of this equipment ;;( conducting training and capacity building sessions ;;( organizing an awareness raising campaign on safety at sea for teachers and youth in schools and ( drafting a document on best practices for safety at sea, which could serve as a basis for by laws on the islands
